It Takes a Team

I am a huge fan of the Tour de France. My husband introduced me to it many years ago, so we always look forward to the beginning of July and the three weeks of cycling that follows. My very favorite part of the Tour is the Team Time Trial, which might surprise most people as it is not the most exciting stage. There aren’t any dramatic sprint finishes or punishing mountaintop pursuits, but it is a beauty unto itself. The Team Time Trial doesn’t happen every year, so it is always a special treat for me when it does. Yesterday was the Team TT in the 2018 Tour. Team BMC, which is an American team, won the stage and they were able to do it as a result of beautiful… Read more »

Core Values & Guiding Principals

Olympic Crest Insurance has seen many changes in the past two years, so when we decided to work on our agency processes and vision, it was necessary to start with who we really are. We began a process of defining our core values and crafting a statement around them. I have always had a sign on the wall that says “Accountability, Kindness, Respect, Honesty”, but I told everyone to pick their own words for what they felt the company was all about. Step one was a long list of words that we felt represented what OCI stands for and then we each ranked the words from 1 to 5. From there, we were able to narrow it down to five words. The original four were still there with the addition… Read more »

Twenty-two Years

A couple of days ago I started getting congratulations notices on LinkedIn for my work anniversary.  I hadn’t even realized it, but that actually represents the anniversary for how long I have been in business for myself. As a professional female business owner in a traditionally male-dominated field, I can tell you that things have changed a lot! I started in the insurance industry over 30 years ago as an administrative assistant in the benefits department of a smaller agency.  After about six months on the job, I went to one of the owners and asked for the opportunity to sell.  His answer was that I wouldn’t be any good at it, but after some negotiations, he agreed to let me do it in exchange for a cut in pay… Read more »

Broker, Consultant or Advisor?

Broker, Consultant, Advisor – which should you choose?  It isn’t the title that matters as much as the approach, expertise, advise and willingness to listen that separates the superior advisors from the merely average.   To get the most value out of your employee benefit program, it is important that you invest as much time in finding the right partner as you do in selecting your benefit plans. For the sake of this article, I am going to use the term “partner” because the title really doesn’t matter.  You want a partner that is focused on your company and your needs, not just meeting a sales quota and checking in with you once a year.  Your partner will want to understand how your company operates, what value it places on the… Read more »

Bigger, Better, Stronger

Failure, Setback, Frustration – those are words none of like this think about or experience.  But in reality, it is going to happen.  Life doesn’t happen in a linear fashion, it is a series of ups and downs, with the goal to continue on an upward trajectory. I have experienced more than my share of setbacks in the past year, but through it all, I try to keep my eyes focused forward and upward, not looking back.  When I do look back, I try to do it through the lens of evaluating what I did right and what I did wrong to affect the ultimate outcome. You often hear the term “fail faster” to indicate that if you aren’t failing, you aren’t trying.  Despite the truth in those words, it… Read more »
